Definition of Mysticism

The word mysticism is also derived from Greek.

  • Muein = to close the eyes or mouth, to keep secret, to initiate
  • Mustes = a person initiated into secret rites
  • Musterion = secret rites to which only initiates were admitted

The word mystery has the following definitions:

  • Unexplained and unexplainable, inexplicable, secret, unknown
  • A spiritual discipline aiming at union with the divine through
    deep meditation or contemplation
  • The experience of such a union
  • Any belief of the existence of realities beyond perceptual or
    intellectual apprehension but central to being and directly
    accessible by intuition.
